The Institute of Caribbean Studies: Conferencias Caribeñas 10

The Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP) presents the Conferencias Caribeñas 10 lecture series for January-May 2012.

Speakers for this term include Luis E. Méndez Márquez, MIS (Assistant Librarian II, Estación Experimental Agrícola–Biblioteca Jardín Botánico Sur); Dr. Viviana Gelado (Instituto de Letras, Universidade Federal Fluminense/CNPq in Brazil); Dr. John Agard (Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies-St. Augustine; Lead Author in the Fourth Assessment Report of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change 2007, awarded the Noble Peace Prize 2007); Dr. Juan Otero Garabís (Department of Comparative Literature, UPR-Río Piedras; Dr. Consuelo Naranjo Orovio (Director of the Institute of History, CCHS-Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Spain); Dr. Sidney W. Mintz (William L. Strauss Jr. Professor Emeritus, Department of Anthropology, Johns Hopkins University); Dra. Martha Ellen Davis (Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic, National General Archives, Dominican Republic); Professor Ana M. Fabián Maldonado (Associate Researcher, Institute of Caribbean Studies, UPR – Río Piedras); Dr. Rebecca Scott (Charles Gibson Distinguished Professor of History and Professor of Law, University of Michigan); Mireille Fanon Mendes-France (President, Frantz Fanon Foundation); Dr. Nelson Maldonado Torres (Department of Comparative Literature, Rutgers University); Dr. Brinsley Samaroo (Professor of History, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine and Research Fellow, University of Trinidad and Tobago); Dr. Patricia Mohammed (Professor of Gender and Cultural Studies, Chair, School for Graduate Studies and Research, University of the West Indies-St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago); Pedro Pérez Sarduy (novelist, journalist and poet; Cuba); Dr. Héctor Martínez Ramírez (Director, Departamento de Ciencia Pólítica, Facultad de Ciencias Sociales, UPR-Río Piedras); Dr. Nicholas Faraclas (Department of English, UPR-Río Piedras);and our own (Repeating Islands’) Dr. Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert (Professor of Hispanic Studies and Randolph Distinguished Professor Chair, Vassar College).

All lectures will be held in the Manuel Maldonado Denis Amphitheatre, CRA 108 (Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building), School of Social Sciences, Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. These events will be broadcast LIVE online via http://www.ustream.tv/channel/cc71.
