The Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation’s (WHEDco) Bronx Music Heritage Center presents a music series to celebrate two living music legends, Eugene “Gene” Golden and Gilberto “Pulpo” Colon, Jr. (the latter, soon to be announced). This two-part series is co-sponsored by the Pregones Theater and the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture.
The first part of this series presents Crucian master percussionist Eugene “Gene” Golden, who will perform live at the Pregones Theater on October 5, 2011, at 7:00pm. The theatre is located at 575 Walton Avenue, Bronx, New York. This event is free and open to the public.
Gene Golden (1940) has played a key role in the evolution of New York’s Latin music scene for the past four decades. With roots in St. Croix, Golden studied Afro-Cuban and Yoruba traditional drumming styles, pushing cultural and musical boundaries. Mr. Golden is devoted to passing on these traditions, and is recognized as a generous, caring and inspiring teacher. Mr. Golden is the leader of the Afro-Cuban group “Quinto Mayor” an all-star ensemble of some of the greatest percussionists in the world. He was also a key member of Esquina Habanera, La Conspiración, Grupo Folklórico Experimental Nuevayorkino and many other music groups.
