Cuba’s 4th National Championships in Underwater Photography are under way. The contest runs from September 22-25, 2011, at the Laguna de Maya in Matanzas, holding competitions in five categories. The three highest placed photographers in the competition will qualify for an international contest known as Fotosub 2012, which will be held in the southern waters of the Isle of Youth next year. The event is sponsored by the Cuban Federation of Underwater Activities [Federación Cubana de Actividades Subacuáticas (FCAS)].
The organizers explained that the tournament seeks to obtain a selection of the best “artistic photos,” which are to be used in a presentation of Cuba’s underwater fauna in a bid to boost tourism (the second highest revenue earner for the Cuban economy, generating over 2 billion U.S. dollars annually). The FCAS’s aim is to “foster the appreciation of the country’s natural beauty and to promote the national tourism.”
