Dominican gov’t urged to protect journalists

Amnesty International  is calling on the government in the Dominican  Republic to ensure the protection of journalists following the slaying of a reporter who covered corruption in the Caribbean country, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Amnesty called for a full investigation into the killing of Jose Agustin Silvestre. The rights group said in a statement Wednesday the government needs to let the public know if the death could have been prevented.

Silvestre’s body was found Tuesday along a road about 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of the capital.  He had a weekly paper and radio show called “The Voice of Truth.” He was detained for six days this year when a prosecutor sued him for defamation over accusations of taking bribes from drug traffickers.
