Dominican Women to Defend Pan American Volleyball Title

The Dominican Republic will be competing with other strong volleyball teams such as Cuba and Puerto Rico at the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup being  held in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Dominican Today reports:

Defending champions Dominican Republic opened the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-13) victory over Canada in Pool A on Friday but in the process lost a key weapon in Altagracia Mambrú who suffered a right-knee injury.

Mambrú, who registered 8 points in her limited time of action, broke a 23-all equalized score with a spike from the right side but twisted her knee while landing and had to be helped off the court. According to sources close to the Dominican team, she will be sent back home on Saturday.

Puerto Rico, Brazil, United States, Cuba and Mexico also were victorious in the opening day of the qualifier tournament to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix.
