The 1st International Colloquium of Latino Presence and Cultural Identities in the Unites States [Identidades culturales y presencia latina en los Estados Unidos] will take place on July 13-14, 2011.
This symposium, hosted by Casa de las Américas’s Studies on Latinos in the United States Program, directed by Dr. Antonio Aja, seeks to foster multiple and interconnecting approaches on Latin American and Caribbean migrations as socio-cultural phenomenon. The three main themes will be: the processes of migration of Latin Americans to the United States, from a historical viewpoint; the intersections of language, literature and Latino identity; and the perspectives of theatre and the visual arts by Latinos in the United States.
The colloquium will be inaugurated by President of Casa de las Américas Roberto Fernández Retamar with a welcoming speech by Dr. Aja. Speakers include Jesús Barquet, Jorge Duany, Franklin Gutiérrez, Vivian Martínez Tabares, Félix Masud Piloto, Achy Obejas, and Sonia Rivera-Valdés, among others.
