In Memoriam: Getty Photographer Chris Hondros

Getty photographer Chris Hondros, whose poignant images of Haiti in the wake of the January 2010 earthquake helped bring to the world the plight of the Haitian people, died today when he and a group of news photographers were hit by a rocket-propelled grenade near Misrata, Libya. We frequently used his images to illustrate our blog posts and now mark his passing.

Hondros, born in New York City to immigrant parents, won the 2005 Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club of America for coverage of Iraq. He was a 2004 Pulitzer Prize breaking news photography finalist for “his powerful and courageous coverage of the bloody upheaval in Liberia.”

He was remembered today as “generous in sharing his experience and insights with younger photographers and journalists. In Haiti, in the wake of the country’s devastating earthquake last year, without hesitation he shared his satellite equipment with others having difficulty transmitting text and images,” a colleague reported.

In February 2010, Hondros, working for Foreign Policy magazine, photographed and wrote captions for this gripping photo essay from post-earthquake Haiti. It remains as a testament to his engagement in the tragedies he reported.
