Vocal sensation Xiomara Laugart, a legend in Cuba, is popularly known as “The Voice of Havana.” As part of the “Sí Cuba Festival” taking place from March through June in New York, and co-sponsored by the World Music Institute, Laugart will perform on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC), located at 153-10 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, New York.
The JPAC describes: “Xiomara Laugart is an icon in her native Cuba, where she has recorded over 15 albums and performed with the country’s top musicians—including Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez, and Omara Portuondo. Known for her sultry, compelling voice and commanding stage presence, the inimitable songstress performs various styles of Cuban music with equal parts power and ease. She has received acclaim for numerous projects, including her starring role as ‘Queen of Salsa’ Celia Cruz in the musical Celia and her work as lead vocalist for the Latin fusion band Yerba Buena.”
