The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo celebrated the 116th anniversary of the Manifesto of Montecristi with a wreath-laying at the bust to Cuban national hero Jose Martí, the ahora.cu site reports. Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet highlighted Jose Martí’s strong ties with the Dominican Republic, embodied in his close friendship with Máximo Gómez, a Dominican hero.
Febrillet also noted the ties between Martí and Federico Hernández y Carvajal, and his three visits to the Dominican Republic to strengthen ties between the two countries, which are more strong than ever.
Cuban Ambassador Juan Astuasarán highlighted the historic magnitude of the Manifesto of Montecristi, signed in that city on March 25. The document charted the foundations, ideals and course of the second war for Cuba’s independence, which had begun a few days earlier, and was championed by General Máximo Gómez until the end.
