Kali returns to Martinique to perform at the Atrium for the launch of the FONDASYON concept. His show will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2011, from 8:00pm to 11:00pm.
Kali, also known as Jean-Marc Monnerville, was born on February 21, 1956, in Fort-de-France, Martinique. He is best known outside of the island for having represented France in the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö (Sweden) with the Creole song in “Monté larivyè.” For Martinicans, Kali remains one of the strong figures of the “6ème Continent” group, which has popularized the island’s musical heritage through his various “Roots” albums.
Kali’s musical career began in earnest when his father sent him to France in the early 1970s to study music. The teenage Kali, heavily into percussion in the early days of his career, gained valuable musical experience performing with several different groups before going on to form his own at the age of 19. By the time Kali formed his second group 6ème Continent in 1979, he had adopted a full-on Rasta style, growing a full head of dreadlocks. Playing a mix of reggae and traditional music from the French West Indies, Kali and his new group soon made a name for themselves on the French music scene and went on to record several hit singles.
