Puerto Rico’s Music Hall of Fame Honors Artists

This weekend, several beloved Puerto Rican artists received recognition and were inducted into the Music Hall of Fame [Salón de la Fama de la Música] in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.  The inauguration was celebrated at the Braulio Castillo Theater. Among the artists inducted this year were singers, musicians and composers including Chucho Avellanet, Lucecita Benítez, Bobby Capó, Bobby Cruz, Tite Curet Alonso, Ruth Fernández, Los Hispanos, Joe Quijano, Danny Rivera, Richie Ray, Gilberto Monroig, Tito Rodríguez, and Trío Vegabajeño.

The artists were presented by other well-known public figures in Puerto Rican media. For example, singer/songwriter José Nogueras presented Danny Rivera; composer and producer Cucco Peña presented Los Hispanos; and psychologist and producer Alfred D’ Herger presented the award to Lucecita Benítez, reminiscing about the time she won first prize at the First Festival of Latin American Song in 1969.

There were many poignant moments during the gala, including a prolonged standing ovation for singer Chucho Avellanet, who has been battling cancer and whose attendance at the inauguration was his first public appearance since he began treatment. Edgardo Huertas presented and received the prize for Ruth Fernández, who is elderly and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Fernández, who has been called “El Alma de Puerto Rico Hecha Canción” [The Soul of Puerto Rico Made into Song], was unable to attend. It was also a very emotional moment for Jacqueline Capó, who accepted the award for her late Bobby Capó. Laura Sánchez Alonso was also moved when she received the recognition for her late brother, famed composer Tite Curet Alonso. During the gala, there was also a minute of silence for the memory of maestro José Luis Moneró.

Besides the tribute given to artists past and present, the evening’s events included performances by the Bayamón Symphonic Orchestra (directed by Ángel Matos) and salsa band NG-2.
