Lecture: Agustín Lao-Montes’ “Afro-Latina/o Politics at a Historical Crossroads”

The Center for Multicultural Affairs joins the History Department and the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Marist College in welcoming Agustín Lao-Montes, a leading scholar of the African Diaspora in the Caribbean and South America, who will present “Afro-Latina/o Politics at a Historical Crossroads: Contending Pan-Africanisms in Light of the International Year of Afro-descendants and the Durban Agenda against Racism.”  The talk will take place on Thursday, February 24, at5:30pm at Lowell Thomas 125, Marist College (Poughkeepsie, New York).

Dr. Lao-Montes teaches sociology; Afro-American Studies; and Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His work includes Mambo Montage: The Latinization of New York City (with Arlene Dávila); Technofuturos: Critical Interventions on Latino Studies (with Nancy Mirabal); Global Hegemony, States, and Antisystemic Movements: Politics and the Political in the Late Modern World-SystemI (with Joya Misra), and World-Cities and World-Regions: New Constellations of Political, Economic, and Cultural Power (with Ramón Grosfóguel).
