A leaked US diplomatic cable has claimed that Lorna Golding, wife of Jamaica’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding, believed US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was under the “nefarious influence” of the opposition People’s National Party (PNP).
The cable, one of thousands leaked by WikiLeaks, reported in December 2009 that Mrs Golding expressed the sentiment to Patricia Attkisson, the public relations officer at the US Embassy in Kingston.
Golding also said that US Representative Charles Rangel was a sympathizer of the PNP, was manipulated by party elements in the Jamaica Diaspora in the US, and was “whispering in Secretary Clinton’s ear” in order to “downgrade” the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the government of Jamaica.
She also claimed that there was a direct relationship between the influence of those elements and the White House’s delay in naming a new ambassador to Jamaica. The cable went further, saying that these factors may have impacted the government’s efforts in finalizing a Standby Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
