From the author’s description: Entre la carne y el espíritu: Narrativa urbana is a collection of short stories about the lives of urban characters mixed in with pieces of ethnographic research and formal knowledge from the world of sciences. In the construction of the characters’ lives [we find intersections of] events, experiences, and moments that give life to the included themes. The main topics—war, love, death, time, society, and politics—are used as an excuse to propose a reflection on what is considered national, Caribbean, ontological, and spiritual.
The narratives—minimalist and stripped of excess elements—are loaded with a poetized social scientific language that describes states of consciousness and provokes existential reflections. The stories take place in a Caribbean context of music, flavors, loves, passions, exiles, and migrations. In these stories, historical facts are blended with fiction in precise measures, like the alchemy of the stews concocted by grandmothers’ hands. Moreover, the narrative voice reveals events and affairs through the generous use of metaphors, humor, irony, stream of consciousness, and eroticism.
Tomás Reyes is an industrial/organizational psychologist. His passion for narrative arose from courses he took with writers Pedro Juan Soto (in 1973), Emilio Díaz Valcárcel (in 1977) y Carmen Lugo Filippi (in 1980 and 2006). His influences, or what he calls his formative trajectory, come from the works of Manuel Zeno Gandía, Luis Palés Matos, Julia de Burgos, Juan Antonio Corretjer, Pablo Neruda, Mario Benedetti, José Luis González, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Gabriel García Márquez, Alejo Carpentier, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Juan Rulfo, and Jorge Amado, among others.
