Melissa Marty Goes Red for the American Heart Association

Puerto Rican beauty contestant Melissa Marty, Nuestra Belleza Latina 2008, is still committed to the campaign Go Red por Tu Corazón (Vístete de Rojo por las Mujeres) [Go Red for Women], which seeks to raise awareness on cardiovascular diseases, especially in women. She believes that “we need awareness; we must learn to have a healthy lifestyle, not only through good nutrition, but also developing a discipline that encourages us to do physical exercise on a regular basis.” Go Red por Tu Corazón is a campaign was created by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. 

Originating from Puerto Rico, Marty was a semi-finalist Puerto Rico Miss Universe 2008 (which was won by Venezuelan Dayana Mendoza). She then went on to be named Nuestra Belleza Latina [Our Latin Beauty] in the same year. Marty, who holds a degree in social communication, won a contract with the Univision Network and a $100,000 cash prize.

[National Wear Red Day is February 4, 2011. Men and women across the United States will show their support for women’s heart disease awareness by wearing red.]
