Display of photos of devastated Haiti marks upcoming Park City fundraiser

Group wants to design a school and an orphanage in earthquake-stricken nation.

Parkites this week will be given a chance to assist with the continuing rebuilding of Haiti and an opportunity to study a set of photos from the earthquake-stricken nation. A not-for-profit organization that provides architectural services to communities and people in need as well as other nonprofits is scheduled to hold a fundraiser in Park City on Friday at the Alpine Coffee House location inside the Kimball Art Center.

The Salt Lake City-based not-for-profit, known as COMMON studio and founded in 2009, is made of architects or intern architects who want to design a school and an orphanage in Haiti. The money raised at the Park City event will help finance the design work.

Dijana Alickovic, a cofounder of COMMON studio, traveled to Haiti in June, saying that the Caribbean nation remained devastated.  “Nobody was cleaning the debris. That was surprising to me,” Alickovic said.

She took the approximately 20 photos of Haiti that will be on display during the Friday event. The COMMON studio website shows images of Haitians appearing to get by in the months after the earthquake and destroyed buildings.

Alickovic said the school her group wants to design would be between 30,000 square feet and 40,000 square feet. The orphanage would be about half the size of the school, she said. The group wants the facilities to be built in a city named Croix des Bouquets.

“After the earthquake, we decided we needed to do something about it,” she said.

The Friday event is scheduled from 9 p.m. until 11:30 p.m., timed to begin after the monthly Park City Gallery Association gallery stroll. Cocktails and light snacks will be offered and a disc jockey will perform at the COMMON studio event. Entry to the event costs $5.

The photos from Haiti will be available for purchase, with proceeds being put toward the COMMON studio work.

Alickovic wants to raise at least $1,000 during the Park City event.
