Scholarship Launched in Memory of Michael Manley

The Independent United Order of Solomon (IUOS), in Canada, has launched a medical scholarship at the University of the West Indies (UWI), in memory of the late Jamaican Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Michael Manley. This announcement was made at an event held at the Toronto offices of the Consulate General of Jamaica, and attended by Mr. Manley’s daughter, Rachel Manley (see photo); Consul General, Seth George Ramocan and members of the IUOS.

The group, which already disburses scholarships to several third-year Medical students attending the UWI, Mona campus, and the annual Kay Baxter Scholarship to a fourth-year Computer Studies student at the University of Toronto in Canada, has also donated thousands of dollars worth of medical supplies and equipment to organizations and countries around the world.

Worshipful Master of the IUOS, Jamaican-born Lloyd Seivright, thanked the sponsor of the scholarship, Jamaican/Canadian businessman, Denham Jolly. He said that when the Michael Manley Medical Scholarship is delivered to a needy third-year UWI Medical student in September, that student will be the 99th recipient of a scholarship since the group started handing them out in 1989. In 22 years of disbursing scholarships, 71 students attending UWI, Mona, and 28 students attending Canadian universities have received scholarships. The UWI students have hailed from Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Miss Manley thanked the organization for honoring her father. She said her father, and grandfather, Norman Washington Manley, lived their lives for the betterment of others.

Calling the announcement of the scholarship a significant event, the Consul General said it is fitting that the scholarship will be going to a student attending UWI, as Mr. Manley played a significant role in the life of the university.

On September 25, the IUOS will hand out the Michael Manley Scholarship and several others to Caribbean and Canadian students at the group’s 32nd Dinner and Charitable Presentation, to be held at the Rameses Shriners Auditorium, in Toronto.

The keynote speaker will be Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Francis Marshalleck, who in 1991 was attending the UWI and became the third recipient of a scholarship from the IUOS.
