Haiti boys into football final at Singapore’s Youth Olympics

The Haitian under-15 boys football (soccer) team has reached the final at the Youth Olympics after defeating host Singapore 2-0. Jean Bonhomme’s header in 38th minute and Daniel Gedeon’s penalty goal in the 89th sealed the victory on Sunday. Haiti will meet Bolivia, which beat the Caribbean island nation of Vanuatu 9-0 earlier in the tournament, in the gold medal match Wednesday. Haiti defeated Vanuatu 2-1 last week to reach the semifinals against Singapore. Singapore will face Montenegro for the bronze medal.

Few gave the Haitian footballers any chance, especially going up against a host team full of confidence. Both teams played their hearts out—but Haiti stunned Singapore by coming away with a 2-0 win to advance to Wednesday’s final against Bolivia. A critical defensive error by Singapore goalkeeper Fashah Rosdin late in the first-half and a desperate penalty late in the game conceded by defender Illyas Lee—who was red carded—ended the dream of Singapore’s team.
