Karin Wilson (Yardedge) brings us information about the winners of the Viewers Choice awards for the National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition 2010. The two awards were sponsored by Claro and the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF). The results were announced last Thursday, August 19, 2010, on TVJ’s “Smile Jamaica” morning program.
The Claro Viewers Vote winner was Berette Macaulay, who was awarded a Silver Medal (Sectional Award Trophy for Adult Photography) for “Liquid Trees No. 033.” David Sykes’ “One Set of Sneaker Prints in the Sand” made him the TEF Viewers Vote winner in the category Adult Works on Paper.
The National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition, is an annual competition and exhibition sponsored by the National Gallery of Jamaica in collaboration with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC). It not only attracts medals and sectional prizes but also allows members of the public to cast their vote. Until last year, there was a single Viewer’s Vote, cast by means of paper ballots. This year, for the first time, there were two Viewer’s Votes: one for the medal winners, sponsored by Claro and operated with text voting; the second for the remaining works in the exhibition, sponsored by the Tourism Enhancement Fund and which uses the conventional ballot voting method. The National Gallery and the JCDC seek to enhance national participation through cultural practices and “to develop, preserve, and promote creative talents and expressions of the Jamaican people.”
