Colombia’s coastal city of Cartagena is set to host the 3rd Afrocolombian Champeta Festival. Champeta is a the name given to a form of music developed by musicians of African ancestry in the areas in and around Cartagena de Indias. (For a compilation of champeta see New cd: “Palenque, Palenque”). The festival will kick off on August 13 with a big opening concert on the Plaza de la Aduana featuring a dozen champeta artists. On August 15, Congolese singer Mbilia Bel will perform at the closing event.
The highly sensual Champeta is one of the most popular music styles and dances in Cartagena and the surrounding Bolívar department.
