A new mural in downtown Kingston is still a work in progress but “it has been creating a lot of buzz recently.” even though it’s. The mural is being painted on the temporary zinc fence surrounding the construction site of phone giant Digicel’s headquarters on the scenic Kingston waterfront. The company says that this is part of their plan to help revitalize downtown Kingston.
With the help of the National Gallery, Digicel commissioned local artists, some from Edna Manley College of the Visual Arts, to create the mural. Stanford Watson, known for his experience with community art projects, is coordinating the process. He explains that the artwork constitutes “a representation of downtown culture. The artists are really allowed to use their creativity to come up with the designs. The plan is to engage people on different levels.” So far, he says, “the response from passers-by has been positive.”
