What’s on Our Nightstands: Cuba a través de mi lente

Puerto Rican photojournalist Ismael Fernández Reyes has dedicated a tribute to the Cuban people in his 2009 book Cuba a través de mi lente [Cuba through My Lens]. The work is prefaced by two leading Caribbean historians, Ricardo Alegría, from Puerto Rico, and Eusebio Leal, from Cuba.

The first of Fernández’s visits to Cuba was in 1989. He was struck by the daily happiness, hospitality, and joy of life of the Cuban people. The book contains 330 photos taken throughout 20 years of visits to the island. It is a volume in which Fernández Reyes breaks with the common pattern of the nostalgic image nourished by exoticism or by a sense of the picturesque found in others’ misery.

Ismael Fernández Reyes was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, in 1960. He is one of the Puerto Rican photojournalists who is most praised for his extensive graphic production locally and internationally.
