After much debate, Dutch music festival organizers have just announced that they will not allow Jamaican dance hall artist Beenie Man (Anthony Moses Davies) to perform this weekend. People were protesting the decision to sign up Beenie Man to replace Snoop Dogg. Parktop, a free, open-air concert, rejected Snoop Dogg, saying he was unsuitable for the event, but instead signed up alleged homophobic singer Beenie Man.
Beenie Man, who was banned from performing at Parktop two years ago, was dismissed from his tour concerts in Australian and New Zealand after gay groups protested. As Voice Online reports, in his song “Damn,” Davies advocates the murder of lesbians and gays with lyrics such as “I’m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays.”
Although he agreed not to perform anti-gay songs during the event in the Netherlands and he has apologized on several occasions for causing offense, protestors continued condemning event organizers over their decision until they complied.
