Ricky Martin is returning to Broadway to perform in the first new production of the Tony Award-winning musical Evita since its 1979 New York debut. Martin will play Ernesto “Che” Guevara. The show’s producers also announced that Argentine actress Elena Roger will star as Evita, a role she played on the London stage in 2006 to critical acclaim. The Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber musical dramatizes the life of Eva Perón, Argentina’s glamorous and controversial first lady.
Martin had already worked on Broadway in the mid-1990s in Les Misérables, acting alongside Elena Roger, who will make her debut in the Mecca of theatre. Speaking about his participation in this new revival of Evita, which is scheduled to open in spring 2012, he says, “I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to perform on many of the world’s largest concert stages, but I’ve never lost my love for the intimacy of the theater. It gives me joy to know that after having had the opportunity to share new music and tour next year, I will once again return to Broadway. I’m eager to play such an essential role in Michael Grandage’s wonderful production and to work with the enormously talented Elena Roger.”
