The Cultural Office of Lamentin announces its 8th edition of the Lamentin Jazz Project Festival, to be held May 17 to 22, 2010. The guest artists and groups include Mo’Jazz (Martinique/Québec), Aleliwon (Martinique), Chengetai (Zimbabwe/South Africa), Trypod (Martinique/Guinea), The Drum Brass Project (Martinique), and Boney Fields (United States). Performance sand jam sessions will take place at the Carrère-Lamentin Hippodrome.
As part of the festival, there will be master classes with leading musicians such as Reynal Drouin and Ghislain Potvin held at the Basse-Gondeau Cultural Center. The cultural center will also host a lecture/discussion on the presence and supportive role of music during anti-slavery battles. The moderator for this event is the well known Martinican historian Georges Mauvois.
Festival Lamentin Jazz Project began in 2002 at the initiative of the Office of Culture of Lamentin in Martinique. Working towards the appreciation and development of Caribbean Jazz and Martinican musicians, the festival has quickly become an essential stage for the jazzmen and music lovers of the Caribbean region. Since its first edition, the richness of its programming won over the audience and sponsors who have helped to keep the festival alive. The festival has always made it a point of honor to host these concerts free and open to the public.
