Jamaica is participating in the Shanghai World Expo 2010 from May 1 to October 31, 2010. The largest tradeshow in world history, some 190 countries and more than 50 international organizations are registered to participate, and China expects to receive almost 100 foreign leaders and millions of people from across the world for the event. It is estimated that around 70 million visitors will attend the expo.
More than 20 Jamaican producers will participate in the six-month long expo, which is being held under the theme “Better City, Better Life.” A broad range of Jamaican products and services will be exhibited in a 3,400 square-foot “Brand Jamaica” booth, which will be part of the CARICOM Pavilion at the expo. The booth will feature spices, condiments, rum, beer, coffee, herbal tea, fortified wines, apparel, and arts and crafts, which will be displayed in packaging written in Mandarin. There will also be ongoing entertainment in the form of live music, dance demonstrations and other cultural activities.
The “Brand Jamaica” booth will be open from 10:00am to 10:00pm and will be operated by four Jamaicans from across ministries and two students studying in China. Jamaica’s participation in expo includes the Ministries of Industry, Investment and Commerce; Youth, Culture and Sports; Tourism (Jamaica Tourist Board); and Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
Some of the main highlights for the Jamaican participants during of the six-month stay in China include CARICOM Day celebrations on July 17 and a Jamaican Independence Gala in August.
