33rd Vieques Cultural Festival

Co-sponsored by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, the XXXIII Festival Cultural Viequense will take place the weekend of April 16-18, 2010, at the Fuerte Conde de Mirasol Museum in Vieques, Puerto Rico. The tentative program includes exhibitions, tributes to key Viequenses Dr. Rafael “Toñín” Rivera Castaño and Mario Solís and their contributions to Vieques’ cultural life, a book fair, a puppet theater (Teatro Títeres), an Arts and Crafts Fair, and plenty of local food as well as music, dance, and theater performances.

Although the program is subject to change, slated bands and orchestras will include the Vieques Municipal Band, Los Pleneritos del Son (Luquillo), Los Pleneros de Vieques, Conjunto Albacaná, and Victoria Sanabria and her Orchestra. There will be many dance performances by professional and amateur folkloric dance troupes including Grupo Folklórico Sol del Caribe (Guayama), Ballet Folklorico Mariyandá, and Ballet Folklórico “Las Caribeñas” (María M. Simons School, Vieques).

The featured exhibition at the museum during the festival will be “El Vieques Times: 17 años de periodismo viequense.” The festival will be dedicated to Charlie Connelly and Myrna Pagán for 17 years of quality journalism for the Vieques Times.

Organizers are working on the possibility of providing a special midnight ferry going from Vieques to Fajardo (on the main island of Puerto Rico) every night (pending approval).

Any contributions for the festival may be sent to Comité Timón Festival Cultural Viequense, Box 71 Vieques, Puerto Rico 00765.
