The world famous Indian dance troupe, the Charkula Arts Academy, will be performing in Montserrat as part of 2010 St. Patrick’s Week celebrations. They will perform at the Montserrat Cultural Centre on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at 8pm.
Led by Murani Lal Sharma, the troupe has performed traditional Charkula and other Indian folk dances in India and abroad. The dance has been performing to packed audiences in Trinidad, including Holi celebrations at the Gandhi Institute. The group is on a Caribbean tour, traveling to Surinam, Barbados, Grenada, and Montserrat. One of the pieces being performed is “Barsane Ki Lathamar Holi,” in which the women hit the men hard with seven-foot long bamboo staffs, while the men try to shield themselves. Another is the “Mayur Raas” dance which represents the love between Lord Krishna and Radha.
