Puerto Rico will be celebrating the 27th edition of its Día Nacional de la Salsa [National Salsa Day] on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey.
This year the music festival will include the participation of El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Corporación Latina, the Zodiac Orchestra, Dom Perignon y la Puertorriqueña, and Del Sur al Norte, among others. Leading singers such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Pedro Brull, Luisito Carrión, and Yolanda Rivera, will perform the most famous compositions by maestro Johnny Ortiz, one of the honorees. Fans will be able to enjoy interpretations of songs like “Catalina La O,” “Ojos,” “El llanto de las flores,” “No se compara,” “Borinqueñeando,” “Me gustas,” and “Caramelito del campo,” among other classics from Ortiz’s vast array of compositions.
Among other honorees, this one-day salsa festival will also render tribute to veteran impresario Héctor Maisonave, who recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at New York’s Lincoln Center in recognition of more than 50 years managing artists and producing musical shows, and Ángel Luis “Paleco” Córdova, who has been a valued resource for many famous salsa band shows for almost 50 years, including his ongoing work with El Gran Combo.
