As part of its Conferencias Caribeñas 6 lecture series, the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras invites the academic community and the general public to the lecture entitled “Los garífunas y la lingüística antropológica” [The Garifunas and Anthropological Linguistics] by Dr. Santiago J. Ruiz (Department of Sociology and Anthropology, UPR-RP). Dr. Nicholas Faraclas (Department of English, UPR-RP), will serve as commentator. The lecture will take place on February 18, 2010, 1:00 – 3:00pm at Amphitheater CRA 108 (Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building), School of Social Sciences, University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras.
Santiago J. Ruiz holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Florida. His research and publications center on language transmission and preservation strategies of the Garifuna in the Caribbean Basin.
