Dominican Republic: Fernando Botero Exhibition

The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals, within the framework of a UNESCO initiative in celebration of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, has designated the Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), as the American Capital of Culture for 2010. This year’s full program of cultural activities opened with an exhibition by renowned Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero. The exhibition will be on view at the National Gallery of Fine Arts until April 4, 2010.

The exhibition—“Fernando Botero: el dolor de Colombia” [Fernando Botero: Colombia’s Pain]—gathers 67 paintings that provide a commentary on the present-day violence. The works include 25 oil paintings, 36 drawings, and 6 water colors depicting the artist’s denunciation of the history of violence in the last few decades in Colombia.
