Casa de las Américas and Havana’s International Book Fair

At Cuba’s 2010 International Book Fair, which begins this Friday, February 12, Casa de las Américas is celebrating 50 years of its Fondo Editorial (publishing department) and its journal Casa. The institution’s inaugural event for the book fair will begin with the launching of the multi-authored collection Destino: Haydee Santamaría.

The event will also feature the winners of the 2009 Casa de las Américas literary awards: Bugalú y otros guisos: ensayos sobre culturas latinas en Estados Unidos, by Juan Flores (essays, Puerto Rico); El exilio voluntario, by Claudio Ferrufino-Coqueugniot (novel, Bolivia); Mañana es lejos (memorias verdes de los años rabiosos), by Eduardo Rosenzvaig (testimonio, Argentina); Réquiem, by Lêdo Ivo (poetry, Brazil), La prometida del señor de la montaña, by Yolí Fidanza (young fiction, Argentina); and Lo que no fue, de Enrique Ferrari (special mention for novel, Argentina). Javier Villafañe’s La calle de los fantasmas y otras obras de teatro para niños (children’s theater, Cuba) is another text to be featured from Casa de las Américas’s own publishing house.

Another activity on the program is a panel discussion, “Una isla en Casa: Guadalupe”[An Island at Home: Guadeloupe], with writers Ernest Pépin, Roger Toumson, Gilda Gonfier, and Marie Claude Pernell, with the participation of actor Gilbert Laumord.

On Friday, February 19, there will be a morning session dedicated to the Fondo Editorial’s 50th anniversary. The afternoon will include presentations of Junot Díaz’s La breve y maravillosa vida de Oscar Wao (US-Dominican Republic) and Edmundo Paz Soldán’s Palacio quemado (Bolivia). Presentations will include classics of Latin American literature such as Las venas abiertas de América Latina (Eduardo Galeano, Uruguay), Las tres mitades de Ino Moxo y otros brujos de la tribu (César Calvo, Perú); Historias del seno mexicano (Carlos Sigüenza y Góngora, México), and Los días terrenales (José Revueltas, México).
