Former President of Dominica Crispin Sorhaindo was given a state funeral on Monday as he was laid to rest following his death last week at the age of 78. Sorhaindo, who was born in Vieille Case, Dominica, in 1931, had a long political career. He served as President of the island, Speaker of the House of Assembly, and Vice-President of the Caribbean Development Bank, among other posts. A devout Catholic who received the Papal Award of Knight Commander of the Order of St Sylvester in 1993, Sorhaindo was also the recipient of the Dominica Award of Honour and the Order of the British Empire. He is survived by his wife Ruby (née Allport) and their six children. The funeral was held at the Roseau Catholic Church and attracted scores of mourners.
