The Dominican Republic’s President Leonel Fernández asked United Nations Secretary General Ban-ki Moon to integrate Dominican Army soldiers to the UN Haiti Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH) so that they could join the aid efforts in that country. The president said, “We are requesting the authorization of a Dominican Army battalion of 1,300 troops to be integrated as members of MINUSTAH,” adding that the troops would not enter Haitian territory as members of the Dominican Army but rather as members of MINUSTAH. He explained that this would facilitate the logistical support and the aid required in the devastated country.
