The 39th St. Croix Agriculture and Food Fair, or AgriFest, will take place on February 13-15, 2010, at the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture fairgrounds (Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex) in Estate Lower Love. This year’s theme is Healthy Food and a Safe Environment Makes Sen$e. The fair is a colorful display of locally produced agricultural products, livestock, arts and crafts, and Caribbean cuisine.
Stafford Crossman from University of the Virgin Islands’ Cooperative Extension Service (UVI-CES) in St. Croix and the organizing committee are reminding vendors, farmers, and exhibitors reserve display space on soon because it is in high demand. They are also urging the public to make plans to attend to this fair, which is known as the Caribbean’s largest fair. UVI-CES, along with the VI Department of Agriculture, the Department of Tourism, and the Department of Health, are hosting the fair. More than 30,000 visitors are expected to take part. Overnight accommodations are also at a premium during AgriFest. Organizers are still awaiting word from international exhibitors who make their appearance each year. Past participants have represented several island nations and territories including the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts-Nevis, Guyana, Antigua, St. Lucia, and Dominica. Crossman says 2010 may see the entry of the Dominican Republic as the latest international exhibitor.
