Sunshine Awards announces 2009 nominees


The Sunshine Awards organization released the 2009 Sunshine Awards nominees for the 21st Annual Sunshine Awards. The nominees are: Anthony Emrold Phillip (Brother Valentino), for his lifelong contribution to calypso music; Bertrand “Butch” Kelman, a master panist and tuner; and the Martineau Brothers, Claude and Frank Martineau, of Trinidad and Tobago.

Awards nominees for Contribution to the Performing Arts are: Alston Becket Cyrus of St. Vincent; Elwin McQuilkin (Black Wizard) from Grenada; William Elcock (Scaramouch) from Grenada; Armando Savaranga Crisanto of La Ceiba Atlántida, Honduras; Eulalia Bernard-Little from Costa Rica; and the Ndere Dance Troupe of Uganda.

Award nominees in the Best Chutney Soca song category are: Samraj Rikki Jai Jaimingal for Leh We Go; Soca Elvis for Monika; Rooplal Girdharie for Aye Sajanee Peeya.

The nominees in the Best Soca Song category are: Bunji Garlin for Firery; Faye-Ann Lyons for Get On; Shurwayne Winchester for Carnival Please Stay.

Guyanese physician, Dr. Ulric Gibson will receive the Sunshine Award for his contribution to public health.

The 21st annual Sunshine Awards will be staged on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at the AXA Equitable Center, 787 Seventh Ave. (at 51st Street) in Manhattan. The program will begin at 6:00p.m. with a cocktail reception. The program will be hosted by Gayelle’s Television producer, host and comedian, Errol Fabien and radio talk-show host and comedian, Nikki Crosby.
