Dominican Fashion Week’s Dominicana Moda 2009 returns for its 4th year October 19-24, 2009 at the Occidental Hotel El Embajador in Santo Domingo. Fashion week, organized by Mirka Morales, Miguel López, and Sócrates McKinney, consists of events including 30 shows spanning 6 days beginning at 12:30pm and ending at 10:00pm. Over 40 emerging and established designers from the Dominican Republic and abroad will be participating.
One international section will be dedicated to the Caribbean (Caribbean Designers Showcase); the designers attending this year will represent Barbados, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad Tobago. The shows will also include designs from Spain, Chile, and Colombia. Dominican designer Luis Menieur is booked for the first fashion show, with the participation of Arlenis Sosa Peña, the Dominican “top model” ranked 24th in the world, who has modeled for a large number of leading cosmetic companies and international designers. Also coming are Austria Alcántara, Avril Guerrero, and René Rodríguez, other Dominican international top models. HaitXchange reports that there will also be at least a dozen Haitian models on the catwalks this year.
This year’s fashion event will feature distinguished Venezuelan (based in New York) designer and entrepreneur, Carolina Herrera, who will present her collection “Fashion for Help 2009” on Saturday, October 24 at 8:00pm, including a gala benefit dinner. The funds collected will go to the program, “Hoy es el mejor día” [Today is the Best Day], a cause directed by the First Lady of the Dominican Republic, Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, who was appointed Good Will Ambassador to the United Nations this year.
