Junot Díaz among finalists for German literary award


The Haus der Kulturen der Welt, a leading Berlin cultural institution, announced plans Wednesday to present an international literary award for works translated into German for the first time this year. It will award the prize-winning book €35,000 ($49,000) –to be split between the author and the translator—according to a statement on its website, which included a shortlist of 14 top candidates chose from 131 titles submitted. The award, which will be presented in conjunction with the Hamburg-based Elementarteilchen (Elementary Particles) Foundation, is aimed at giving ‘new impetus to the exchange of literary worlds,’ the statement said.

Among the authors, who hail from 53 countries and whose works were translated from 33 languages, is Junot Díaz.
