This year Expo Latino 2009 in Calgary will feature Caribbean artists based in Canada such as Rafael-Energía Dominicana and Qbanito. The expo will take place at Prince’s Island Park in Calgary (Alberta, Canada), August 28-30, 2009. Expo Latino will also host the Reggaeton Fest (August 28, at Prince’s Island Park) and Bombazo 2009 (August 29 at the Chinese Cultural Center).
Rafael-Energía Dominicana and Qbanito have been making waves in Canada. Rafael is a Dominican singer and songwriter based in Montreal. His 9-piece orchestra specializes in merengue, bachata, salsa, and other “tropical-Latin” tunes. His great talent has been highlighted often in the Canadian press. Luis Martinez-Peraza (Consul Adjoint of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Canada) has called him “a tsunami of energy,” while Ken Druker summed his performance in Jazz at Lincoln Centre (New York City, 2009), by saying, “Now that’s a singer. Beautiful.”
Havana-born music producer, artist, composer, arranger, and engineer Qbanito “channels and traditional Middle Eastern music to create a uniquely multicultural interpretation of contemporary Latin R&B.” He spent his adolescence in Cuba, and at age 17, he relocated to Montreal to perform and continue shaping “his burgeoning Cuban rap sensibilities.” His CD, Adivina quién llegó [Guess Who’s Here], “reflects the ever-changing style of Latin music.” Qbanito adds a taste of Middle Eastern rhythms, elements of hip-hop, and French pop to the reggaeton sound (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/qbanito1).
