Singer Lucecita Benítez, considered by many to be Puerto Rico’s “National Voice,” received yesterday her official residency papers for the Dominican Republic, according to a press release issued by the Dominican General Migration Office. The news has come as a surprise to many of her admirers in Puerto Rico, where she is closely linked to the Puerto Rican pro-independence, anti-colonial movement. Benítez, whose career has spanned more than four decades, said in a press release that there are “strong ties” between her and the Dominican people and declared herself “in love” with the Dominican Republic. She added that the Dominican Republic is a country where she “feels safe.”
It is unclear at this moment whether she will move permanently to the Dominican Republic, or whether this is the first step towards renouncing her U.S. citizenship.
