Dominica’s Literary Festival


Dominica will be hosting its second annual Nature Island Book Fair and Literary Festival from August 7th to 9th 2009 at the UWI Open Campus in Roseau. The festival will feature a number of prominent writers and playwrights, among them novelist and playwright Earl Lovelace and novelist Colin Channer, founder of the Calabash International Literary Festival. The program will also include Kwame Dawes, Bajan poet and entertainer Aja, and Marie Elena John, who will be on island with her producer Rudy Langlais to begin discussions on her up-coming film, Unburnable, based on her own novel.

As part of the activities for this year, The Nature Island Literary Festival will again feature works from Dominican novelists Jean Rhys (best known for her Wide Sargasso Sea, and Phyllis Alfrey (author of The Orchid House). Elma Napier’s novel Black and White Sands, about her life in Dominica in the 1940’s will also be featured. The novel was recently reissued by Papillote Press,

This year’s festival will highlight an exciting weekend of readings, storytelling, music, and performances by internationally acclaimed and local writers and artists. There will be writing competitions and various workshops on poetry and short story writing and workshops for children. All events are free to the public.
