Porfirio Rubirosa and the history of the convertible

A piece on the allure and je ne sais quoi of the convertible car published by the French newspaper Le Figaro identifies the late Dominican playboy Porfirio Rubirosa with the chic-quotient of the glamorous cars. “In the collective imaginary,” the article says, “the fervor for these types of car is nourished by mythical film scenes like those of a Dolce Vita or photographs of celebrities—Françoise Sagan at the wheel of her roadster Jaguar or playboy Porfirio Rubirosa crashing his convertible against a tree on the Bois de Boulogne.”

If convertibles are your thing, the article can be found (in French) at http://www.lefigaro.fr/lefigaromagazine/2009/06/27/01006-20090627ARTFIG00164–un-air-de-vacances-.php
