The 31st International Festival of New Latin American Cinema will be held in Havana, Cuba, December 3-13, 2009. The festival has been held yearly since 1976, when Havana hosted over 600 cineastes and writers including Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez. The deadline for submission is September 10, 2009.
The festival promotes and awards salient works that contribute to enrich and reaffirm Latin American and Caribbean cultural identity. The annual competition presents awards in the following categories: Fiction, Documentary and Animation, Opera Prima, Unproduced Script and Poster. Besides that, the program includes a showcase of contemporary world cinema, industry sector initiatives as well as meetings and seminars on cinema and other issues of cultural interest. Film screenings, conferences, workshops, and related activities are distributed throughout various neighborhoods in the capital— Habana Vieja [Old Havana], Vedado, and Casco Histórico, the historical center of the city.
Various publications are closely tied to the festival. The Festival Diary, published since 1986, offers reviews by leading film critics from Cuba and abroad, interviews, and coverage about festival events and participants. The Festival Catalogue, published since 1993, is a hefty tome containing film descriptions of submitted films and materials, selected reviews, and information about the film jury, awards, and the selection process. The journal Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano [New Latin American Cinema], published once a year, is dedicated to Latin American film production and its diversity, directors and their intellectual trajectory. The journal will select and feature articles related to the festival.
