Puerto Rican singer, composer, and fervent proponent of Puerto Rican independence Roy Brown will be this month’s guest of honor at his Cuban colleague Sara González’s peña in Havana. The Peña or music club bears the tongue-in cheek name of El jardín de la gorda (The Fat Woman’s Garden) as a humorous affirmation of González’s identity. Brown, a well-known member of the Puerto Rican “new song” of the late 1960s and 70s, has always been a politically committed singer/songwriter. He will be performing solo and with González beginning on May 24th.
