Dominican Playboy Extraordinaire Profirio Rubirosa Featured in Book on Snob Society

A new book published in France, Snob Society: Sex, Drogue & Jet Society by Francis Doléans (Flammarion), which features 100 portraits of the snobs, dandies, film stars, and coutouriers that inhabited French café society in the 1950s and 60s, includes a profile of Dominican playboy Porfirio Rubirosa (1909-1965). Rubirosa, who was once married to the daughter of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, was, according to the New York Times, the Dominican Republic’s answer to Pepé le Pew.” Stories about his sexual prowess dominated magazines and newspapers. During the period covered by Dorléans in Snob Society, he was linked romantically to Dolores Del Rio, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Soraya Esfandiary, Veronica Lake, Kim Novak, and Eva Perón. He married in quick succession two of the richest women in the world, Barbara Hutton (an American socialite and heiress to the Woolworth fortune) and Doris Duke (heiress to the tobacco fortune).

“A tireless presence at chic nightspots and watering holes, a keen race-car driver and polo player, a friend to the rich and infamous, a relentless pursuer of women with huge bank accounts,” the New York Times writes, “he went on a lifelong tear that ended, fittingly, with a spectacular car crash in 1965 after a night of heavy drinking at a Paris club.”
