United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization to meet in Nevis

The annual regional seminar of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization will convene in Nevis from May 12-14. The Committee was created in 1962 to monitor the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, which stipulated that all people have a right to self-determination and proclaimed that colonialism should be brought to a speedy and unconditional end. In 1990, the General Assembly proclaimed 1990-2000 as the International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism. A Second International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism was proclaimed in 2001. With this second decade coming to a close, there is concerned about lack of progress in fulfilling the goals of the 1962 Declaration.
