The 12th annual Feria Internacional del Libro Santo Domingo 2009 (Santo Domingo International Book Fair) will take place from Monday April 20 to Sunday May 3 at the Plaza de la Cultural Juan Pablo Duarte. Among this year’s honorees is fiction writer and cultural critic José Alcántara Almánzar, who will receive the Dominican Republic’s most prestigious literary award, the Premio Nacional de Literatura (National Literarure Prize). Alcántara Almanzar, a unanimous choice for the Prize, is considered one of the best contemporary short story writers in Spanish. Other honorees this year include poet and feminist activist Chiqui Vicioso and Rita Indiana Hernández, a young poet and writer of fiction. This year’s Feria is dedicated to the memory of short story writer and former President of the Dominican Republic Juan Bosch in the centenary of his birth.
