Peter Jordens has shared with us the many links related to the Independent Olympic Athletes—three of which are from Curaçao. Apparently, the Independent Olympic Athletes made a spectacular entrance during the Opening Ceremony’s fast-paced Parade of Nations stealing the show from Queen Elizabeth and James Bond (Daniel Craig), who pretend-parachuted into the stadium from a helicopter with their dance routine.
As Jordens writes, three of the four independent Olympic athletes at the 2012 Olympic Games in London are from Curaçao—Liemarvin Bonevacia (track and field – 400 m), Reginald de Windt (judo – 81 kg division); Philipine van Aanholt (sailing – laser radial class)—who joined their South Sudan counterpart Guor Marial (track and field – marathon) in the parade. Other Curaçaoan athletes, who are also competing at the London Olympics but under the flag of the Netherlands, are Churandy Martina (track and field – 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay), Brian Mariano (track and field – 4x100m relay), and Jean-Julien Rojer (tennis – doubles).
