A 23 year-old Guadeloupean athlete, Eloyze Lesueur, became European champion in Helsinki in the long jump competition with a jump of 6.81 meters on her first try, making sure that no one could beat the record.
Lesueur was in tears when she received France’s first gold medal at the European Championships. This is a great victory for the Guadeloupean athlete, whose previous injury had ruined her performance in 2009 and 2010. Although seven of the ten best jumpers in the world were absent, this title proves to be a good omen for the new European champion.
Leseur said, “This is my first podium finish. Avec l’or en plus ! And with gold! Ce n’est que quand ma dernière adversaire a effectué son dernier saut que j’ai pu savourer ma victoire ». It was only when my last opponent made her last jump that I could finally enjoy my victory.” Même si sept des dix meilleures sauteuses étaient absentes, ce titre est donc de bon augure pour la nouvelle championne d’Europe.
