KI Persad won the 2012 Chutney Soca Monarch title with his song “Single Forever” (see below). According to Turn it Up Son, he beat Rikki Jai (one of my favorites) by about 4,000 votes.
KI—Veeshal Kris Persad—is a young, talented, musician; he is best known as the keyboardist, drummer and front line singer for the crossover band JMC 3Veni. As the Guardian wrote in November 2011, KI, the son of JMC 3Veni founder and musical director Veerendra Persad, “is enjoying a magnificent career in his two years as a vocalist, and continues to rise as the fastest artiste in this genre of music in the history of the chutney soca art form.”
Some of his chutney soca hits include “Catch Meh Lovah,” “No More Rum Again,” “Womanizer” (the remix of the Guyana Road March in 2010), and “Same Girl.” Last year, 3Veni won the Crossover Band of the Year award at the International Chutney Soca Awards, held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Trinidad.
